NVIDIA GeForce GT540M lagging FPS drop on games..
Hello Forum! Dunno if this is the right section to post this to but here goes. Recently, I have been experiencing major lag issues on games such as heroes of newerth and skyrim. My FPS would go to 30ish in HON, sometimes even when just casting spells. My games would spike/stutter every 5 secs or so, but i'm sure it's not network lag because this still happens even on 50ping games. I also have 2 GPU's: the NVIDIA one and the integrated INTEL one (Intel HD Graphics Family) Here are my system specs:

Hi!

I have exactly the same problem, similar computer with same graphic card, also with an INTEL integrated card. A few weeks back FPS dropped in every game I play. Reinstalling and updating drivers were unsuccesful, I tried 296 and 268 driver version but it didnt work, no idea what to do...

I also noticed some delay while watching 2 or more youtube videos at the same time...dont know if it is related.

Hi,

It sounds strange. Are you two sure its not some power saving mode like nvidia's power management @ adaptive mode(per game profile) fault?

Did you try prefer max performance in those games? and when you say the latest driver you mean 301.24 too? What about something like 295.73 or 285.75beta?

About that intel HD gpu, did you update any drivers for it? Maybe it silently updated and now it conflict with nv driver? Same question for thread starter..

And can you disable this intel HD gpu?

Also there was a windows update ~ 10.4.2012, maybe it installed something that was not ok for your laptops?, i know there was a new net framework update - i've set it to manual again..

hi spy,

no, i'm pretty sure it's not the power management because i have already set it to "prefer maximum settings". i have actually also tinkered around with different combinations of the nvidia settings but still to no avail.

about the drivers, i have tried to install the driver from my ACER CD (266.19), and also the latest driver for 540M from the NVIDIA WEBSITE(296.10 WHQL, http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-296.10-whql-driver.html), and also the latest driver from the ACER WEBSITE(268.83, http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers) - all dealt no significant change whatsoever. I haven't tried the beta drivers yet, maybe i will and let you know.

about the intel GPU, i tried to install the drriver from my ACER CD (8.15.10.2266), and also the latest driver from the ACER WEBSITE (8.15.10.2345), both also had no significant effect.

no, i can't disable the integrated intel GPU.

about the windows update, i currently have set my laptop to NOT update windows automatically since i reformatted my laptop to WIN7 Ultimate x64 from a WIN7 Home Premium x64 (come to think of it, the lag started happening after i reformatted, but that couldn't have been the cause could it?)

Hi, thanks for your reply

Sounds pretty strange, but looks like some other people have the same issue. I set power management to prefer maximum settigs with no improvement.

I tried 285beta and performance improved a bit, still unplayable. 301, 268 and 295 tested. I cant find any intel gpu update recently in my computer, and cant disable that gpu. net framwork updates may have any effect in this? I will try uninstalling them.

Thanks again!

EDIT: I tried uninstalling a net framework update. After a couple of windows update searches, I found an HD intel graphic update (released on april 20th) and installed it. After rebooting, some games improved. Some of them worked as good as before the issue started, some others gained FPS but still a bit slow...

Intel graphic driver shown is 8.15.10.2696...

Acer Travelmate 8473G (laptop) Native Resolution is 1366 x 768

Intel Core i5 2450M 2.50 GHz
4.00 GB DDR3
Windows 7Pro 64-bit
Nvidia Geforce GT 540m

My Intel integrated graphics can run Cities XL 2012 just fine....my discrete graphics card cant.

When using the 540m for cities xl it is super slow, it looks like it is permanently refreshing and moving across the screen happens in skips and stages.

I am pretty disappointed.

Anyone have any suggestions?

And I don't know if is just me but I see a trend 540m problems. They seem to be related to Acer laptops more than not...very strange.

I have exactly the same problem with my geforce gtx 540m. I can play league of legends on low
settings or on the highest settings and I can't notice any difference. Each 4 minutes my fps
drop to 1 fps so i can't play it. This happens on almost every game. i hope for a fix.

This is really annoying....
I just tested it again and risen 2 is running with 20-23 fps on the lowest settings
20-23 on medium and 12-15 on the highest settings... This doesn't seem normal. I hope someone from
Nvidia will take a look in this problem

I think we are all stuck with this problem. My temporary solution is just use the integrated chip instead of the nvidia chip. Dota2, HoN and Diablo3 are playable but in low video settings. Steady 30fps ingame and no stuttering. I tried every solution I found in google but still no solution.

I have got an option for this problem. Try using game booster from Iobit. It increases the pc performence.
