I can confirm this driver just appeared today and is marked as WDDM 1.2.

GPU-Z shows on my GTX 470 that CUDA, PhysX, and DirectCompute 5.0 are available, but NOT OpenCL. I am not sure if these are available from the previous install of the full nVidia drivers.

Here is a mirror copy of the 64-bit drivers - there is no setup program so you have to manually update or provide the driver location:

I can confirm this driver just appeared today and is marked as WDDM 1.2.

GPU-Z shows on my GTX 470 that CUDA, PhysX, and DirectCompute 5.0 are available, but NOT OpenCL. I am not sure if these are available from the previous install of the full nVidia drivers.

Here is a mirror copy of the 64-bit drivers - there is no setup program so you have to manually update or provide the driver location:

Windows Update: Download Driver CAB [151MB]

Personal Mirror: Download Win.Vista.7.8-x64-nVidia.296.17-v9.18.12.9617-WDDM-1.2.exe [146MB]

I could not make these install on Windows 7 yet.

EDIT: Even after more attempts I can't make these install on Windows 7 64-bit. The exe, that is.

And what about Windows performance rating? With Win7 drivers Win8 CP shows the same 7.9 rating on GTX 5XX cards, but Win8 introduce more fast 8-8.9 rating.

I was able to install these on Win 7 64-bit. I hear it can be installed on Vista 64-bit as well.
I downloaded the cab file then updated the drivers through Device Manager and chose the nv_disp.inf within the cab file and it was fine.

Windows 7 U x64 SP1.

Although these drivers do not give the ERROR43 and other issues I have experienced with all 29x drivers, now the nVIDIA Control Panel will not start.

It is in the Desktop context menu.

I can see it attempt to run when I click on the context menu item, but it immediately closes without ever launching the GUI.

One step forward, one step back.

The 296.17 drivers are reported as WDDM 1.2 in Windows 8
but they are reported as WDDM 1.1 in Windows 7.

Hello,

My uploaded copy was truncated and corrupted because of storage limits. This has been fixed, but I suggest getting these directly from the Windows update source.

Windows 8 uses WDDM 1.2, but is backwards compatible with WDDM 1.1, 1.0. It just won't use those added WDDM 1.2 features in the OS if the driver isn't marked for it.
Windows 7 uses WDDM 1.1 and has no idea what WDDM 1.2 is so the drivers will fall back to the WDDM 1.1 feature level.

While it's not listed in the log files for the Windows Experience Index, I believe that graphics cards that are not DirectX 11.1 capable are limited to 7.9.

In Windows 8, be sure to Reboot (not shutdown) after the driver install and the nvidia control panel should work. If not, you will need to uninstall reboot and reinstall. Technically, you shouldn't need to reboot, but these instructions are the safer option to avoid problems.

Thanks Alex. Installed this from Windows Update directly over 295.73. No reboot, no problem. OpenCL, Cuda, and the works.

We do not recommend users install these drivers on Windows 7 or Windows Vista. This driver was created for Windows 8 Consumer Preview as a separate branch and has not been tested on other operating systems.

We dont have a choice as the only driver that works is 290.53 .The latest for win 7 was bad so nvidia consumers will look for something that does work.I think its time to revamp your control panel to something that works properly .I always have probs with setting up temp with addons. But hey if something isnt done soon my next up grade will be amd.The ball is in your court!!!

I can never understand the "bad drivers" on the major releases these days. I've been using nVidia's latest official drivers (and beta) for the past 12 years (since "Detonator" and TNT2 graphics) and I rarely ever have a problem using any of the drivers. On occasion, there have been some major issue (like a fan not spinning up) but these bugs are major and are quickly fixed. I do agree that I wish the performance of the nVidia Control Panel was better, but it seems fast enough now because of the CPU power available since the Core2 architecture. I can only expect playing with Windows 8 or the latest cutting edge drivers would break some things (like Optimus).

The software is digitally identical in so many installations where the 99% don't have issues. We have the same Windows files and the same core x86/x64/sse2 instructions are used. In fact, in some cases, the same GPU is used, yet some people have issues while many others do not. In such case, I tend to blame the quality of the hardware.

To be fair, there are exceptions where the driver did break something... for example hardware video acceleration problems have been reported by many different users of different GPUs which seems to be fixed by updating another application software (ex. Flash 11.2 RC). Of course, I just happen to be lucky because old and new versions of Flash don't cause problems for my hardware and I bet the same can be said for the nVidia software developers as they scratch their heads saying, "It works for us on our standard and stable test systems!"

Thx for the response secured2k ...I,m just worried that nvidia guys will put the problems into the too hard basket and hope they will just disappear. The flash thingy was a prob 4 me and also "nv driver has stopped responding" of which i was in the club.

The 296.17 drivers are reported as WDDM 1.2 in Windows 8
but they are reported as WDDM 1.1 in Windows 7.

obviously, DXGI sets the WDDM compatibility, not the driver.
