Dead Island losing SLI scaling in-game
  1 / 3
So here is my post describing and picturing the problem a bit. 99% 99% GPU usage means SLI works. 60% 60% GPU usage means SLI going down.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=4094100&postcount=410

It seems that the game drop the SLI scaling when only rendering some scenes. I could actually reproduce the SLI loss by only moving my cursor at the same place EVERYTIME. Also, alt-tabbing would make the SLI scaling comes back only IF I was looking at a scene that doesn't make the SLI gone otherwise alt-tabbing won't reset it. I know, pretty weird huh?

So let's say I look around on a spot and everytime I look at a building, for example, SLI scaling is gone. Only if I look at that building on the spot i'm standing.

So far, these do not cause this :

-Forced AA
-Force AF
-Afterburner
-Steam Overlay
-Steam Cloud
-Fullscreen On/off
-Overclock
-USB key plugged :P
-Tried 2 SLI flags, same issue
-Prerender limit
-Adaptive/Maximum performance

Can anyone else reproduce that?

Let me do a walkthrough for you :)

I look at this scene : SLI works

I'm now looking a bit down. SLI going down.

I'm trying to alt-tab. SLI still down.

I'm now looking back up. I try to alt-tab. SLI working again !

Rinse and repeat.

Enjoy Nvidia.

enable a CPU usage over lay.

sli scaling is still working in all your screenshots, its the fact the gpu usage has dropped for some reason that is the cause of a performance drop, you aren't running out of vram so its not that.

Disable threaded optimisation and try again.

alt tab working means it could be a memory leak :|

Look I'm an advanced SLI user enough to know what I'm talking about. 60% usage on both cards is barely a working SLI. It basically spreads the load of a 99% usage card on 2 cards.

It is NOT random. I can reproduce it as much as you want by doing specific actions. Here's another walkthrough.

Oh look a zombie (SLI working)

Let's kick him (SLI working)

Pfft I'm gonna smash his head (SLI is gone)

Do you still want me to reproduce the bug? :P

SLI Scaling refers to the difference when adding additional SLI capable gpu's, usually measured in a percentage.

Your GPU's are doing less work, Scaling is affected down the line but is not the cause of the problem. Why this is the case is up to any number of up the line issues, Poor multithreading being the first and most obvious one to look into. The GPU can only go as fast as the CPU can prepare DirectX draws in any case.

Also, everytime I hit a zombie with a melee or a gun, I'm losing SLI. I can reproduce that 100%.

edit: I'm 99% sure that it is the 2D red blood splat that is causing it. It is triggered by melee hits, head splashing, bullet gun shots etc.

I aim at body (SLI working)

I shoot one bullet in the body (SLI gone)

Alt-tab. Rinse and repeat.

This needs to get to Nvidia eyes anyway because it is beyond my understanding.

MSI Afterburner.

Anyway here is the final culprit.

As soon as I have this effect in my screen anytime anywhere (even a gang of zombies eating corpses on the ground far far away), SLI is going down. I think I narrowed as much as I can for Nvidia. Is there an official bug report somewhere?

What exact Settings are you using? Do you have a Savegame from these Places? I can try it here to reproduce, it may be possible the SLI Profile has some Problems. Have you installed all the Patches?

I tried a lot of settings combination and it is always happening. From low settings to high settings to forced AA to forced AF to adaptive/performance to prerender limits etc. It is always the same. I tried 3 different SLI flags : 0x02400005 , 0x02400805 , 0x02402005 (nvidia default)... same results. As soon as my Field of view (FOV) got any blood splat effects (circled in my previous picture), SLI is going down no matter what. It is happening in the whole game. I have installed all patches.

Just cut a head or a limb off and look at it. Even a gun shot or melee hit will trigger the bug.

Wanny, disable the steam overlay, its causing high cpu load and dropping the directx draw batching.

I could reproduce it, possible that a new Patch is necessary to fix this Problem.
Try this SLI-Value "0x02502005" If it helps.

Glad to hear it ! This SLI flag didn't work but thanks anyway :) I'm happy that someone finally tries to reproduce it instead of looking at me like a crazy dude.

I also tried 0x02500005 (modified CoJ) , 0x02500805 (modified CoJ cartel)

No, you are right, in Fighting or directly after loading a Checkpoint, the GPU-Usage is too low.
