You should not run any driver newer than this: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html

i can try that but i have a feeling it's not the card. what else could it be??
I'm re formatting again and trying an old card and if the problem persists then that should prove that the problem isn't the card.

Thank you, that did it! :D
No way I could get the driver that nVidia actually recomends to work. It is not able to start and gives me the exclamation point in the hardware list. With this one everything worked fine, Direct3D 9 tested fine...all good. /woot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />

The card in question is an AGP GeForce FX 5200 128MB.
