GTA 4 No SLI support.......
i just picked up GTA4 for the PC today and to my dismay it has no SLI support. Does anyone have a work around or maybe info as to when we will have a new beta driver that will include GTA4 SLI support? i found this info buried in the rockstar support section...........

"Crossfire/SLI
With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2)
SLI is currently unsupported.  Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver."

well thats great news. i think from the sounds of it we will need a new beta nvidia driver as well

UPDATE

you can force a half assed SLI by adding the launcher to a profile but the game still says you only have half the video ram as you really do and by watching the sli load bard it doesn't look like its really working.

aw, me too, i felt a lag in the game with medium anti filter and medium setting with 80distace all.
and in all high setting in crysis with 2anti i barely lag so..
i hope it comes out soon,
how will i know if it does?

You are looking at this wrong, even with SLI enabled you are STILL only going to have the same amount of vram as you do with 1 card.

SLI doesn't double (or triple with Tri, quadruple with quad) the amount of vram so that a GTX280 + GTX280 = 2GB of vram....you still are only using the 1GB of vram.

yes but it improves double performance. but i dont know about 3-way SLI. if it actualy improves triple
but sli does improve double. bcuz i am getting double or even more than double fps in most of games.
cept for crysis. i use to get 18-24 all high settings 8xaa after i got sli i am getting smooth 35-50 with high settings 8xaa

Ah, so SLI makes use of the GPU power but not the vram? Why is that, and could they change things so that the vram on both cards is used? It seems odd to me to let all that vram go to waste when it's sitting right there.

Would this be the same with one added PhysX card? Still just the ram size of the primary card that will show in-game??

Yes, it would be the same if you added a physx card. The Vram amount can be determined by looking at the amount of vram that resides in the primary PCIe slot. So, even in Quad SLI where you have 4 GPUs and 4 seperate amounts of vram, in the case of the 9800GX2 its 512MBs of vram.

This is the main reason why the 9800GX2's are garbage, even in quad-sli you can only utilize 512MBs of vram, not enough especially at larger res's.

Sli is simple terms for other posters this not NUTZ LOL, makes each GPu render a frame and in most cases add's 30-50% extra FPS over a single card. Thus the VRAM on each card does not double as it card is rendering a frame in turn.

So 1 GTX 2 GTX and 3 GTX all equal 1GB VRAM. yes Cuda and Dx11 "may" change this but not yet!

Right now, new nvidia drivers are needed for SLI and GTA4 so its single card only, thus 9800 GX2 owner will fit as only 1 GPu works and unless your happy to run at 1680 res or below 512 VRAM is a BIIIIIGGGGG limitation in this game if you start trying to max the settings. So this is one game that runs fster on my 4870x2 for once as my GTX's wtf pown it at FC2 and Warhead LOL. (although it crashes on ATI!)

With new driver and patches and tweaking many will be able to hit 60+ fps no issue at higher res soon. In the meantime tweak the settings and frankly anything not a GTX 280 lower the textures AF+AF and distance and res to increase FPS.

So folks its tweaking time. And before anyone cries Rockstar should have done it, on GTA4 forums there is plenty of advice to mimic the X360 or Ps3 versions and thus get great FPS even on lower end rigs.

Kinda same rules as crysis.
i just picked up GTA4 for the PC today and to my dismay it has no SLI support.

BTW CF does work but crashes alot so Ati owners don;t have it that much better, new drivers from ATi and nvidia are needed probably just as much as a patch as rockstar changed the engine alot in last few months so it may take a few weeks to settle.

but as PC gamers this does happen, so in the meantime tweak settings lower or play something else while waiting for patches.
