Q8200 vs Q6600
  1 / 3
Well, I'm buying a rig soon, and I'm still not decided on which CPU to go with...
a forum member who owns the Q8200 told me that it was better than the Q6600. I did my research and found out (if I'm not mistaken) that the Q8200 is better at stock speeds but since it has a 7x multiplier it will be a bit harder to OC it, and as we all know the Q6600 is a really good CPU to OC...
i would need help to decide which CPU to buy between those two, or perhaps if the Q9400 drops price maybe i can get it.

Here are some benchmarks i found:

Benchmark 1

Benchmark 2

Benchmark 3

Please help me decide...
thanks

I've never messed around with the Q8200, but I'd recommend the Q6600 to anyone, especially at current prices. I've gotten mine up to 3.5 Ghz stable (and climbing), and with my GTX 260 Core 216's, I recently posted a P19,296 in Vantage.

So, I say Q6600, only based on my own experience with the Q6600 - call me biased.

I'd get neither. As much as i'm gonna get flamed for saying this, there are so much better options then an old 6 series. Yes, the Q66 was good, but it's not the second comming of christ anymore. It would be better to get a really good cpu and have that for a year untill good nehalems come out then sit for a year on a half decent cpu not feeling like uprgading cause you just bought it. I got a Q9550. Wicked processor. No regrets.

ya but since I'm buying a whole new rig im sort of in a budget, and unless prices drop i wont be able to get any other CPU than the Q6600 or Q8200

E8400 is cheaper then the Q66, and performs on par, or better and overclocks way higher.

What other CPUs can you recommend (quad cores) cause i wont be upgrading for quite some time, and i want something can last that time

Sometimes you can find QX6850's on ebay for ~$350.

As far as the CPU goes that's what I'm still deciding...
All the things above gives an estimate of $795 including shipping, my budget is around $1000 and I'm still missing that CPU
thx

The 9450 is the best. I only got a 9550 because my local store had an error and listed the 9550 which is 200mhz faster at 9450 price. But what im saying is unless you're willing to pay more then 250-300 dollars, its better to get a high end dual. The E8400 gets the 4.0 pretty easy with good cooling. Some people are running it 4.2 on tuniq towers etc.

Wow , I actually disagree with headless , a Q6600 will run circles around an E8400

LOL, i know stalker1...you're supposed to be my friend here = agree with everything i say no matter what :P

But, seriously, you're right. In every day operations, quad cores always win, but in practical gaming, there are only a handful of games that use 4 cores and the big name titles comming out between now and next august dont look like they're gonna benefit all that much from 4 cores versus 2. IMO a really high dual would perform better or the same as a q66 assuming it was overclocked to like...3.2..3.5.

Yup. But, i bought it a while ago, with the intension of not replacing it for as long as i can. And, like i say, i knew the performance would be on par with a really good dual, so it was the same dif to me. Plus, im on a much better proc then q66. I also wanted something that would handle my SLI well. Now, the OP is saying he's building a machine now, and he wants a proc that'll work for him untill the switch to nehalem, which is why i suggest just sticking with a E8400, over the old q66. Im not saying the Q66 is bad, im just saying it gets more praise then it deserves, and it's not the best choice right now for him IMO.
