Do PCI Express 2.0 X16 work with PCI Express 1.0 ? Do PCI Express 2.0 X16 work with PCI Exp
I can't find any info on cards working backwards like AGP sometimes did. Example some AGP 8x cards would work in an AGP 4x slot it would only run like half as good but still work. Any help would be awesome thanks.

PCI express 2.0 X 16 wont work in PCI express 1.0.

But a PCI express 1.0 will work in PCI express X 16

well, I can say that my 8800GT (PCIE2.0) worked fine in my nforce 400 ultra board (that was 1.0)

and I can say that my 7600GT (1.0) worked fine in 750i(2.0) board when I was testing...

So the short, easy answer is.... it should.

What is the application? maybe someone here can give you some insight if that has been attempted already and what to expect...

ab30494 I think tou might have been confused as to the question - he is not trying to use an X16 card in a 1x slot he is talking PCI-E versions... which are supposed to be backward compatible...

though for a quick bit o humor - I did run my 8800GT in a 4x slot for a short time on the 400 ultra board (there was a good reason at the time - i swear) and while the performance did suffer a bit... it was still very impressive!

Are we talking PCI-e 16x versions 1.0 and 2.0 here? If so, then yes, they are fully compatible with each other, only at the speed of the slower part. So a 2.0 video card in a 1.0 port will run at 1.0 speeds on and off the board. If you place a 1.0 card in a 2.0 board, same thing. The card will only run at 1.0 speeds.

ah thanks guys that's what I thought. I have a PCI-e 16 slot that is 1.0 but I want to upgrade the video card to the nvidia 280 Right now I have a kind of rare card MSI NX7950GX2-T2D1GE GeForce 7950GX2 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 and my mother is Asus P5WDG2 WS Professional 975X I don't know if that helps any. I was looking at getting this card...BFG Tech BFGEGTX2801024OCE GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 just wanted to make sure it worked in a PCI-e 16 1.0 slot before I put it in and not waste alot of money. Thanks again guys.
