NIC locks up during large file transfer
Platform: Tyan Thunder K7X m/b w/ nForce CK804 integrated controller and dual AMD Opteron 64-bit CPU's, running 64-bit Fedora Core 6 with linux 2.6.22.5-49.fc6 (driver is forcedeth 0.60). Connected to router: Cisco 1801W running IOS 12.4(11)XW6.

Recently I tried downloading Fedora Core 9 Beta using bittorrent. After just a minute or two, the network stopped responding. My system's debug log shows the following messages:

ethtool showed the link was still valid, but I could not ping the router from the PC, and wireshark showed no incoming packets when I tried to ping my PC from the router.

In short, I tried:
* bringing the eth0 interface down and back up
* shutting down the network port on my router and bringing back up
* physically disconnecting and reconnecting the network cable
* rebooting the computer
* rebooting the router
* booting into Windows XP (32-bit)

The network still didn't work after all that. Finally I tried switching the cable from the primary ethernet port to the secondary port. That port worked. I attempted again to download FC9b and once more after a minute eth1 stopped responding, and I got a similar tx dump in the debug log.

After reading some related posts on the web I tried powering down my computer, switching off the P/S (to make sure it wasn't keeping the NIC on standby) for a minute, then cold booting. Both interfaces started working again. I made a third attempt to download FC9b. This time it lasted several minutes, but eventually eth0 locked up again.

Before I cut the power again, I like to know if anyone has encountered this problem before, whether there is a way I can reset the NIC back to working order without rebooting, and if anyone knows what could be causing this problem and how to prevent it from happening again?

ethtool showed the link was still valid, but I could not ping the router from the PC, and wireshark showed no incoming packets when I tried to ping my PC from the router.



In short, I tried:

* bringing the eth0 interface down and back up

* shutting down the network port on my router and bringing back up

* physically disconnecting and reconnecting the network cable

* rebooting the computer

* rebooting the router

* booting into Windows XP (32-bit)



The network still didn't work after all that. Finally I tried switching the cable from the primary ethernet port to the secondary port. That port worked. I attempted again to download FC9b and once more after a minute eth1 stopped responding, and I got a similar tx dump in the debug log.



After reading some related posts on the web I tried powering down my computer, switching off the P/S (to make sure it wasn't keeping the NIC on standby) for a minute, then cold booting. Both interfaces started working again. I made a third attempt to download FC9b. This time it lasted several minutes, but eventually eth0 locked up again.



Before I cut the power again, I like to know if anyone has encountered this problem before, whether there is a way I can reset the NIC back to working order without rebooting, and if anyone knows what could be causing this problem and how to prevent it from happening again?

In fact, because I wasn't transmitting a lot of data, it took about 17 minutes from the time I lost my connection to the router until the kernel reported "NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out".

I still haven't found a way to reset the NIC without disconnecting the power supply.
