Battlezone 1 wrong colours +slowdown in battle Activision Battlezone 1
I've just built a new system with a Gainward 8800GT PciE, and in Battlezone (1)
It runs at 75fps as normal until there is a lot of action (explosions/shooting etc)
It is darker than previous installs, the radar is VERY dark, and the lines
to a selected object are very dark green (almost black) instead of the
normal bright green, much more different than the other textures, which apart
from being darker than normal are the right shades.

It is running on Winxp, I have run it on two previous systems with XP
and though it doesn't run as well as on Win98 it has never been like this
before. Previous cards were 6600GT, 7600 and 7800, and they had no problems.
I tried an ATI 1950 for a few weeks, but it chopped distant objects and the
linux drivers are "less good" (the box is dual boot)
I have had to change render.cfg settings for grabled text, and have tried
turning off mip mapping, and triple buffering to no avail

This new system is nearly twice as fast as the previous one, I don't expect
new cards to always run old games well, but this is so much worse
It makes the game (Happens to be the one I do most....) unplayable
This 8800 runs other modern games like Race07 really well, at higher frame
rates and more detail than I could before
it just seems to fall down on old DX7 support
Anyone seen similar? or can offer advice?

Many Thanks
Matt.

Hi Matt,

this is Joern from Berlin, Germany. I'm also a big fan of the Battlefield series and like you, I bought myself a new rig a month ago with an MSI NVidia 8800 GTS 512 MB grafic card.

The first thing I always do when setting up a new pc is checking wether my beloved battlezone is still running, and it did. One month later, the system is now ready with al its details (man, that was work) I decided to fire up battlezone to kick some reds asses and noticed that something was different. (I always install battlezone and battlezone - the red odyssey first and then copy over the old installs in order not having to edit the render.cfg in both folders.) Yes, you will guess it, black lines (are they dark green really? I will check this with gamma correction) appear on info at objects or direct controlling a unit. Right now installed two different forceware drivers, changed the render config, nothing has changed right now. I think it has something to with directx compatibility.

What I will do next is: remove the nvidiadriver again, clean it with driver cleaner -> www.drivercleaner.net, get myself another forcewaredriver from 3D guru (I recommend it to you and also get yourself the excellent rivartuner 2.07 for turning on manually the fan option for better cooling your card. You can also overclock, downclock etc. Get yourself also PC Wizard as monitoring your hardware, great tool.

So maybe we can synchronize our efforts and keep in touch, maybe later we play together/each other via www.battlezoneclub.org/ or hamachi

I had some replies from the guys at Battlezone Enhanced
http://theoutcastsclan.com/dx/vb/showthread.php?t=433

We are very much not alone, lots of people on this forum
are having trouble with 8000 series in older games
(Some not really that old)

The BZE guys reckoned there was a bilinear problem for
the dark lines, not sure whether that includes the big slowdowns
or not.

I have tried using older drivers, but there aren't any old enough
that support 8800. I am running BZ1 on another sytem with
6600GT and WinXP and it works fine.

Last update for the 8800 was 19th December, I have been
patiently waiting for an update, but none so far.

Matt,

I couldn't follow the link to the outcast clan site although I'm registered. Maybe you could send me their answer via mail. I think we can swap adresses ;-)?
I tried to change the bilinear settings with rivatuner, but i was not successful.

my email is: retoxdafreak@web.de

Something funny happened: I downloaded BZE (battlezone enhanced, only multiplayer! but thats what we wan't to do, don't we?) and you won't believe but the grafic errors are gone.

Maybe you can direct the guys to this strange phenomenon, because it is not possible to combine the single player with the enhanced version.

The file should be here, but lately it is not. :-(

http://theoutcastsclan.com/modules.php?name=Downloads#get
there is also a lot of other stuff ;-), maybe you can get it elsewhere.

Hi,

I don't know if you sorted this problem out yet, but you may want to download the latest modder version of Battlezone, Battlezone 1.4M.

This is a large file (77MB) that self-installs the entire Battlezone game on your PC. You will still need the original CD to start your own games, play addon maps, etc, but it sounds like you have the CD. It already has all the patches built-in and adjusted render.cfg files, etc. that seem to work well with Nvidia cards (but not new Radeon cards, like the HD4350).

I was having a very bad time installing and running a manually installed version, using the original CD then adding the patches (1.4, large assets, etc) and I kept getting unhandled exception problems. There is also another modder version of BZ floating around on the internet, 1.4L, that worked on my old XP machine, but not on my new PC.

Currently, I have BZ 1.4M running perfectly (no unhandled exceptions, display working perfectly, etc) on my new HP Intel Quad Core Q6600 PC under Vista 64bit, 4GB RAM, with an Nvidia 512MB 9600GT graphics card.

The link below has a couple of additional links shown on the web page that will send you to at least two other sites that you can download 1.4M from. The reason I'm giving you the link that leads to the other links is that this site also has other BZ patches, info, dowloads, forum discussion, etc. you may be interested in, especially since battlezoneclub.org is down for an indeterminate period. One of the links leads you to a gamer clan website that has 1.4M and another leads you to a bit torrent site with 1.4M.

Based on all the posts I've read, the newer the graphics card, the harder it is to get BZ to run. Also, 64 bit Vista has compatibility issues with the original install version of BZ. The only thing I had to do on my machine to run 1.4M was set the launch icon to WinXP/2000 compatibility mode. No other adjustments were needed. During the install, the installer will ask you whether you want a Win98 or WinXP/2000 install. For you, choose the XP install. The installer does everything else.

I hope this works for you. We need all the BZ players we can get!!

It has nothing to do with the version of BZ, they all have the same effect. It is an issue with the Nividia card or the drivers.

Get it updated and then test this version of BzE out.
