X-Wing Alliance Best flightsim in 3D
I don't know if I'm the only one that didn't notice this game when it first came out in 99, but I recently purchased this game from e-bay after reading some great reviews and I have to say it is the best space flight sim I have ever played. It looks just great in 3D. I think going into hyperspace is one of the coolest effects I have seen in 3D. The coolest thing so far is the sparks showering out of the screen at you when you’re taking damage. I had already decided this was a great game and I found a web site that has very detailed updated mods for most of the ships. I can't extend my appreciation enough for the folks at Xwing upgrade. I'll post a few before and after shots so you can see what great work they have done.

This is a Lawrence Holland game, same as Tie Fighter and X-Wing vs. Tie, but there is much faster gameplay and complete rudder control.

Excellent! I will have to give that a try. I have a copy floating around somewhere... Oh, btw, Alliance is not the best flight sim game, that would be Descent Freespace (all 3 games). Alliance would fall just before that. I don't know how Freespace is in 3D, but if it isn't, then Alliance would be the best of that category!

Thanks for the tip, I look around for it.

It is REALLY addicting for its age (1998 first game came out, 1999 second game came out). Total there was 1 game plus it's expansion and then a full second game.

Names:
Descent Freespace: The Great War (trailer: http://youtube.com/watch?v=G6xzWtIA0HQ)
Descent Freespace: Slient Threat (expansion pack)
Descent Freespace 2 (trailer: http://youtube.com/watch?v=r08pQHjF1X0&mode=related&search=)

Just for your info, these games have absolutely nothing do do with the 3 Descent games that were made, it must have been a trademark from the company or something to sell more copies...

Edit: I should also mention 1 more thing, both games had killer soundtracks that really keep you in the game!!! The music is by far the best of any game out there, far better than Freelancer!

Just ordered Descent Freespace - The Great War & Silent Threat from e-bay, I have no doubt it's a great game being from Interplay, I sure do miss them. Thanks again NITRO

No problem. You will play them over and over again because each time you play the game, it gets a little bit better. By far, the first 2 games were the best, but I can't give you a accurate rating for FS 2 because I haven't played it yet, although I do have it. I lost interest in it because shortly before my hard drive smoked out a year ago, I had just customized out my new Joystick/Throttle 50ish button rig for the game. All that time and effort... lost! I am going to get back to getting that game installed again now that I can play it in 3D. I have alot of games that I want to play in 3D now.

Anyway, not to drift off topic, I hope you enjoy the game. The background music is so awsome. It changed with the tide of the battle so cleaverly that you almost don't even know it. For a while, I thought it was 1 continuous soundtrack, but it wasn't. This is something that most games don't have. Enjoy playing the best older space flight-sim game out there!

Just installed Freespace, It seems like a pretty cool game so far but it is not as good in 3D. I'm sure I will enjoy it though. Is there a way to change the resolution?

I think with the mods, X-Wing Alliance looks almost as good as the flight sims on Battlefront 2. I would still have to say X-wing Alliance is still the best space flight sim for stereoscopic viewing.

I believe there isn't a way to change the resolution. I could be wrong, alot of the interface is hidden with all those sliding doors and stuff. I will have to try out both games in stereo 3d when the 8800 driver comes out. You will love Freespace btw, it is far supirior to X-Wing Alliance, atleast in my opinion.

Btw, thanks for the freespace screenshot. Since I don't have the stereo view software in my system (for obvious reasons), I had to pull out my lornette hand-held viewer (the "mess your eyes up" one). Nice screenshots! I can't wait to stereo game!

Has anyone got this working with the new 3d vision glasses? (start of thread was from 2007) I've got it installed and running on windows 7 x64 using the new installer from the links at xwingalliance.net and it runs fine if 3d is not enabled but crashes on start when enabled or enabled and hidden (tried it on vista 32 bit as well with same results) other 3d apps work normally for the most part. Tried the 1.10 and 1.13 cd drivers with the same results. Just curious if anyone has this working or has run into the same problem? Thanks in advance...

The freespace games are fantastic and are my favorite space sims of all time, but I've never been able to get them to work well in 3d.

Thanks, but just to clarify I'm trying to get x-wing alliance to run with 3d vision vs freespace. It should look great in 3d with it's simpler graphics and true 3d bumpits as you can see from the original screenshots posted by ohgrant back in '07 but he must have been using the legacy stereo drivers + other shutter glasses I'm guessing. I also tried it in vision discover mode and then the startup screens will come up in 3d mode but when it starts rendering the actual flight it's 2d only. Still fun to dust this one off and the the new ship models from darksaber's ultimate craft pack and uxaupgrade really make it look like a new game. (turn off the 16 bit back drops though, ick!). Got to dust off my massive sidewinder force feedback 2 joystick as well /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> They just don't make them like this anymore. The 3d sound in this game is awesome too. If anyone can figure out if there's a way to get this to work let me know. Thanks.

(One other note is that I have the same won't start with 3d enabled or hidden but runs fine otherwise issue with star trek bridge commander so it may be a common issue with win 95/98 era games?)
