dots on boot 8x.xx Doesn't get into windows
  1 / 11
I've seen a lot of hardlock problems with the 8x.xx. My particular problem is that I get black screens with 3 to 5 dots up in the upper left corner before entering Windows. Is this the same problem others are running into? Do these dots diagnose anything?
I have updated mobo drivers and used the driver cleaner with still no success 8x.xx drivers. I was hoping this last .95 release was going to fix it but no luck.
I just need to understand that my hardlock is the same as the others having hardlock.

Athlon 2000+
1.5 gb ram
Geforce 6800GT
Dual Viewsonice 191b
Gigabyte GA 7DX

Thanks,
Khye

That's exactly the same problem I have. Every 8x.xx driver so far does the same thing.
I have AMD 2100+, GF 6600GT and 1GB DDR RAM.

I think I saw couple more guys with the same issue in another thread.

I'm getting the same problem with the 8x.xx series.

I get them on next boot after installing the new drivers over existing NVidia drivers. If I boot to safe mode or try to install the drivers over the builtin VGA drivers the installation freezes my system where the screen normally goes blank for a second. Instead of coming back and finishing the install then asking me to reboot all I see is a black screen with a flashing console-style cursor in the top left.

Specs:
Tyan Tiger MPX (S2466)
Dual Athlon MP 2800+
1GB Reg. DDR RAM
Geforce FX 6600GT (AGP)
Audigy2 Platinum

XP SP2.

Had originally thought it was a multiprocessor problem, but now I'd speculate that it's something to do with the AMD-7xx (762 in my case) and these new drivers. It seems pretty unlikely that we'll get an update from AMD, since they've long since moved on, and I'm out of luck with Tyan too methinks, so I'm hoping NVidia will work around it in their code.

>2 year old hardware has little support from any vendor these days, but my fingers are crossed that NVidia haven't crossed the 6600GT off their list yet.

What chipsets are you guys using?

Might try playing with a bit of remote debugging to see if the problem can be isolated to the AGP driver or the nvidia display driver... But that probably won't be any good without symbols for them.

Aside: the dots are interesting... I think I've seen them before, when a video card thinks it should be displaying an image but the system thinks it's in console mode. Wish I could describe that in more technical detail but I've only seen it before in some dodgy resumes with Linux APM stuff.

That could be the culprit...

My specs -

Motherboard: Gigabyte (AGP)
CPU: AMD
GPU: V9999GT (6800GT)
RAM: 1GB Kingston

I get the same "five dots" issue with any 8x.xx drivers.

So, if every one with an AGP system encounters that problem, I think that’s it.

I have some older FIC AD11 motherboard... with AMD 761 too. It could indeed be the problem.

What about rest of you guys?

Northbridge: AMD 761

As already suspected, it looks like an AGP problem.

So, we have so far pretty much narrowed it to AMD 761 chipset. How should we proceed? AMD offers update to 761 chipset (pretty old tho) but it just made my computer act even more strangely.
I have no idea what's the version provided with Windows XP.
