Next, next generation First Person Shooters

Are you guys looking forward to the day when FPSs are indistinguishable from a well-rendered CG movie?

Games which will appear as such are only about 3 years away at most. Imagine if the gore and physics were so advanced, that you would actually feel responsible for a player's death, and you could destroy a building completely.

I guess the downside to all that would be that the games might take longer to develop.

What do you all think?

Does anyone know what engine the upcomming game F.E.A.R is on? The visuals are nothing special (as they somewhat resemble HL2), but the game looks fun to play with.

Personally I feel Doom 3 already got the look of a cg movie.

Agree; i think that with Unreal Engine 3.0 we can start seeying some nice improvements on cinamatic gaming, as we do with DooM 3 (but not at the same level of details of UE 3.0). I really want to see that engine in action.

Well, Doom 3 looks exactly like a cutscene we would have seen in the late nineties. There was a statement made by John Carmack a while ago where he stated that soon his engines will be able to render Pixar quality graphics in real time.

This will be sooner than you think. Already Valve has a sandbox company with the sole charter to make a movie engine. They recently hired a demo programmer away from NVIDIA, the coder who did the NV30 gas station and NV40 ship at sea.

I always wanted to see an acctual feature length movie using a game engine in real time. If you could get around the loading and whatnot, that would be pretty neat. I love game cutscenes, and I feel it's almost a dieing art. Seems to me that cut scenes are becoming fewer and fewer, perhaps I'm just on glue.

A movie, or even a featurette using the UE3, CryTek, Source, D3, etc, engine would be pretty cool. The better the system, the better the experiance syndrome would be atfualt perhaps though. Still, it would be nifty.
