Does the hdmi port on the 8800 gt actually output hd to connect to a TV?
Does the hdmi port on the 8800 gt 512mb actually output hd to connect to a TV? Do I need an HDMI cable, or an adapter?

Ah you mean that "off-the-wall" Galaxy 8800GT? Yes; that card had HDMI support up to 2560x1600 @ 30hz. Just keep in mind that you must have the card's internal SPDIF connected in order to be able to send audio.
